Find Your Invincible Summer

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." Albert Camus, French philosopher and writer.

This quote encapsulates the essence of finding strength, warmth, and optimism within ourselves, even during the coldest, darkest seasons of life. The “invincible summer” Camus refers to is a metaphor for the resilience and hope that reside deep within us. It’s about finding joy, warmth, and purpose in even the most challenging times. Winter, with its introspective energy, can provide the perfect space to reconnect with this inner light, helping us cultivate peace and strength during the season’s darker days.

Here are a few ways to make the most of this time, especially as the Winter Solstice occurs soon on December 21.  Look inward and take care of yourself so you can prepare for the renewal of your spirit in the Spring.

1. Practice Gratitude: Life, like Winter, may seem bleak at times, but it offers plenty of opportunities to find beauty and gratitude. Take time each day to appreciate the little things: the warmth of a cozy blanket or the glow of a candle. Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s missing to what’s present, helping to nurture our internal light.  Look for the little signs of life in the Winter blooms outside and enjoy flowers indoors with bulbs and by forcing flowering branches.

2. Embrace Reflection and Renewal: Winter invites introspection. Use this time to slow down and reflect on the past year—what you’ve accomplished, what you’ve learned, and what you want to carry into the new year.  You can use this time to improve your self intellectually or spiritually, or you can improve your health.

3. Nurture Your Body and Spirit: Just as nature rests and recharges during winter, it’s also important for you to take time to nurture your physical and emotional well-being. Engage in practices that recharge you, whether it’s enjoying a warm cup of tea, doing restorative yoga, or simply sitting quietly in nature. Treating your body with kindness can help rekindle your inner light, keeping you strong in the colder months.

Camus’ quote invites us to hold on to hope, even when everything around us feels heavy. Winter doesn’t last forever, and neither do difficult times. Trust that, just like the seasons, your internal summer will rise again. Cultivating hope through self-compassion, perseverance, and faith can help you weather the challenges of winter and move toward the light of spring with confidence.  Rather than feeling stagnant, view this period as both intentional rest and potential for growth.
